Soho House New York Review: What To REALLY Expect If You Stay

ny soho house

All have impressive (and expensive) minibars with still and sparkling water, snacks (including some from Dean & Deluca), full-size liquor bottles, Perrier Jouet champagne, and sodas. Along with fancy glassware, there's a cutting board, knife (for the fresh lime and lemon), a Nespresso coffee machine, and a proper tea set (this is a London-based company, after all). Upscale extras include REVO Heritage Sound Systems, Egyptian Cotton sheets, bathrobes, and slippers. Bathrooms have walk-in showers with rainforest steam and showerhead systems, an abundant spread of toiletries with everything from deodorant to toothpaste to tampons, and an impressive range of Cowshed products in full-size bottles. These are free to use but guests will be charged the full price of the bottles if they take them upon departure. The cocktail hour is prime time, and drinks flow until late at night.

Bangkok Supper Club

Throw in the infamous rooftop pool and terrace -- which some consider worth the price alone -- the Cowshed spa, library, and free Wi-Fi (for those who attempt to get work done), and it's clear there's not another hotel in NYC quite like it. Social life in London has long revolved around members-only clubs such as Annabel’s or 5 Hertford Street, but the concept has largely been foreign in New York. Yet private clubs are on the rise in Manhattan like never before, with an uptick that began before the pandemic and has only picked up steam since. While at the onset of the pandemic having a membership at someplace like Soho House suddenly had no use, now such access is all the more in demand — and newer clubs like Zero Bond, NeueHouse and Casa Cipriani are making it a trend.

Cities like Paris, New York City and London are so popular that they eventually see multiple locations and concepts within their region. Soho House Mexico City opens later this month, while one in Sao Paulo is slated to open by the end of the year. New U.S. Soho Houses are also underway in Portland, Oregon, and Charleston, South Carolina. "I was hoping to survive for 20 days, let alone 20 years. So, it's been a journey, but because we got it right in New York, it gave us America, which has been incredibly kind to us." A lot has happened for Soho House since it first arrived in America in the early aughts.

Formally named Grasmere House, it will be set on the historic Grasmere estate, a 250-acre former working farm. Non-members can add the privileges at checkout through our 30 day free trial, cancellable at anytime. The quality score helps ensure that our selection stays fresh and vital.

Soho House isn't giving up on its homeland, but it's safe to assume the interest isn't waning in the Americas, either. It's been 20 years since Soho House first arrived in North America in New York City's Meatpacking District. You might remember the location from the "Sex & the City" episode that featured a Ginger Spice cameo and Kim Cattrall's Samantha-turned-Annabelle Bronstein membership.

The age range is wide (there's even a special membership for women ages 27 and under) but strict house rules -- like no pairs in the toilets -- help ensure the party atmosphere stays classy. Tablet Hotels is all about discovering the world's most exciting hotels — places where you'll find a memorable experience, not just a room for the night. For 20+ years we've scoured the earth, evaluating hotels that meet every taste and budget, creating a hand-picked selection that's proven and inspired. In fact, our painstaking curation led to Michelin making us the official hotel selection of their legendary MICHELIN Guide.

These hotels might have dominated tabloid gossip pages for celebrity hot spots, but they weren't the most inviting. Still, you'll find plenty of social media posts regarding overcrowded clubs. Airlines tackled this with their airport lounges by limiting who could get in. Don't expect Soho House to raise membership rates to address its own crowding concerns. The announcement of Grasmere House comes as Soho House & Co. announced a '20 Houses by 2025' commitment for North America.

An all-day menu includes classics like artisanal cheeses, a chicken club sandwich, linguine, scallops, and a filet. The late-night menu includes marinated olives, a burger, meatballs, and fried calamari. Desserts include more cheeses, chocolate almond torte, and strawberry rhubarb crisp. The cocktail list offers signature items like the Soho Mule -- a take on a classic Moscow Mule, and many wines are offered by the glass, carafe, and/or bottle. With decor that changes annually, cushy lounge chairs, umbrellas, and striking city views, this is one of the most coveted summer spots in Manhattan.

The Dream of ‘an American LVMH’ Dims

Members-only clubs have long been the social method of choice for the who's who in cities like London, but the phenomenon has been catching on in New York. As the pandemic continues to change the ways we go out, the rise of private clubs only continues to grow. Look to the upcoming Mexico City location as an example of the Soho House leadership team's strategy to ensure people still want to get into those 45-and-counting locations. After all, those potential guests could easily go to a lifestyle hotel nearby that doesn't come with the stress of needing to get off the waitlist. Up in NYC, the Ned is nestled in the 167-room NoMad hotel and features dining establishments the public can also enjoy.

Those who choose to stay here pay steep prices not just for the rooms but for access to the private enclave -- in other words, Floor Six. This is where the club space is located with a restaurant, bar, and modern art collection. There's a buzz throughout most of the day, from breakfast (brunch on weekends) until the wee hours when the late-night menu is served. Attractive movers and shakers working on laptops, impressing colleagues, or dining at a number of chic sitting areas are omnipresent. Members are "creative" types, while Wall Street types, supposedly, aren't welcome to join, but that doesn't mean that Soho House has an absence of monetary worth.

The countryside concept is similar to the U.K.’s Babington House, an 18-acre British estate outside of Bath with 33 rooms across its historic buildings, which has become somewhat of a celebrity retreat. Not only has it hosted comedian James Corden’s 2012 wedding and Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne’s 2014 nuptials, it's also a beloved vacation getaway for the likes of Courtney Cox. Not always known for its food, The Soho House has made cuisine a priority in recent years.

Members across New York, London, and Doha can access all of Ned’s Clubs globally until the end of 2025. In D.C., Ned’s Club will house two private restaurants called the Loft Restaurant and Rooftop Terrace. Members can dine and drink while soaking up 12th-story views of President’s Park, the 82-acre landscaped grounds that call the White House and the U.S. Menu details are slim for now, other than the fact Ned’s plans to use local and global ingredients in its drinks and food.

The front desk is heavily guarded by a small team of polished and friendly staff that greets members, visitors of members, and hotel guests. Check-in is personal -- sometimes even done by the General Manager himself -- and then guests are whizzed up to their rooms via one of two elevators. You'll still enjoy the full fabulous MICHELIN Guide experience when you book, including our legendary service and delightful style. You’ll also get access to member-only discounts and a dedicated team of travel experts ready to provide personalized assistance along every step of your journey.

But not every hotel can immediately connect their reservation system with ours. For those properties, we provide real-time rates and availability via a partnership with Booking.com. “We’re not just providing physical spaces but an environment that reimagines networking, entertainment, dining and events in an iconic building and location that only D.C. Could offer,” says group managing director Gareth Banner, in a statement. The space had previously been built out to become a bar by other owners, but was left unfinished.

Jane by Design: Season 1, Episode 1

jane by design cast

The subtext of the scene is that the doctor, leaving room for hope, is gently trying to get the mother to realize the bleakness of her child’s prospects and thus better weigh the risks and benefits. Herzog’s skill as a writer means that you feel the conversation alongside McAdams’ character, you are alongside her on a journey no one wants to take. As the 95-minute show progresses, the audience becomes oriented on Mary Jane’s world and gets up to speed on her son Alex’s condition. Mary Jane’s daily schedule revolves around medications, machines, timers and very little sleep. Alex has been assigned a fleet of night nurses, but Sherry (April Matthis), who has worked with the mother and son for the past year, is the most consistent and dependable. Her nurturing energy extends beyond the young boy to Mary Jane, making the trio a makeshift family.

The Conners Is Losing Its Wednesdays-at-8 Time Slot on ABC — Find Out Why

It’s a tricky system to capture in a tight play with a five-person cast and sparse, economical staging at the Samuel J Friedman Theatre, but it’s one this Broadway edition, directed by Anne Kauffman, manages to wrangle through the nucleus of Mary Jane. She’s the center of a network of women who help care for Alex, from contracted at-home nurses to emergency room doctors to supportive parents of fellow chronically ill children. The first half of the play takes place in Mary Jane’s Queens apartment, which is small, bright and lightly cluttered and which levitates to reveal a sterile, eerily white hospital set for the second half.

Series Cast 11

There is an exquisite grasp here of the feeling that Karen Carpenter was expressing in the song where she sang “Don’t they know it’s the end of the world,” the bizarre disconnect those under familial stress feel from a world that refuses to stop or even slow down. During her tenure as Mary Jo Shively on Designing Women's seven-season run, Annie Potts, now 71, also landed several film roles in iconic movies, including Pretty in Pink, Jumpin' Jack Flash and Ghostbusters II (after starring in the first film in 1984). Dixie Carter began her career in TV in the 1970s, with her first onscreen credit coming from The Edge of the Night.

Season Info

All this happened without a major overhaul to Michael Greif’s production, which has a book by Kristoffer Diaz. The cast and creative teams are essentially the same, and there have been judicious tweaks and trims rather than radical changes. The main differences are further refined technical elements and, most important, a subtle but crucial change in focus. In 1993, she lent her voice to the Pink Panther series and later appeared on High Society, Style and Substance, In-Laws, 24, Samantha Who and more voiceover work on the Disney Channel series Kim Possible — to name a few.

In 1976, she also originated the role of Melba Snyder in Broadway's Pal Joey. After starring as Julia Sugarbaker on all seven seasons of Designing Women, she played Randi King on Family Law beginning in 1999. All the actors in “Mary Jane” save for McAdams portray dual characters in the first two acts. Jared Janas and Brenda Abbandandolo, respectively, work well.

Jane by Design — Cast & Crew Cancelled

Hard to think of another play that understands so well. Potts married husband James Hayman in 1990, and they later welcomed two children together. Potts is also mom to son Clay Senechal, whom she shares with ex-husband B.

Jane Quimby (Erica Dasher), an average, everyday 16-year-old girl, winds up with a job at the prestigious fashion company Donovan Decker and a chance to work with a world-famous designer, Gray Chandler Murray (Andie MacDowell) and her quirky co-workers, Jeremy Jones (Rowley Dennis), India Jourdain (India de Beaufort). They do not know how old she is or that she is still in high school. Here you will find an overview of the cast & crew of the Jane by Design series from the year 2012, including all actors, actresses and the director. When you click on the name of an actor, actress or director from the Jane by Design series, you can view more films and/or series by him or her. A teenager leads a double life as a high-school student and an assistant to a fashion executive. And so much does she desire Alex’s comfort, his fleeting moments of child joy, despite tubes and immobility and illness.

The play has a hypnotic, suffusive effect – there’s not one heartbreaking or cathartic moment but a series of many wins and setbacks, hurdles and sprints of human care, that left me on the verge of tears for hours afterwards. In her small gestures – climbing into bed with Alex, reassuring him that “Mama’s here” – McAdams, with the chorus of help around her, conjures a world of compassion, one I missed when it was over. Alex, the two-year-old child at the center of Amy Herzog’s excellent play Mary Jane, is a constant presence on stage, despite never showing his face nor saying a word. Alex can’t, actually, vocalize anything – he was born with a paralyzed vocal cord, his endearingly peppy mother explains, along with other health conditions such as cerebral palsy, requiring round-the-clock care.

The power of the performance lies in McAdams’ ability to deglamorize herself without letting that undermine the formidable, everyday optimism of this character. How could all of this happen to her, you keep thinking, letting the play send your mind spinning as to what life for Mary Jane would have been like without this challenge. “Mary Jane,” which stars the excellent Rachel McAdams in the title role and was first seen at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2017, is a closely observed play, reflective of the same attention to detail that its title character showers on her child, who has cerebral palsy.

A teenager lands a job at Donovan Decker, a hip fashion house, when they mistake her for an adult. Jane soon finds herself juggling life both as a regular high school student and as an assistant to a high powered executive in the cutthroat world of fashion... It’s McAdams’s Broadway debut, and though she started the play, in my viewing, a bit jittery and unnaturally rhythmic, she soon settled into her role as the linchpin in this young’s boy curtailed life with magnetic ease.

As a single mom caring for a special needs child, the weight of Mary Jane’s existence and her adoration and love for her son are the anchors fortifying this narrative. By the time the final curtain on “Mary Jane” drops, the audience is fully immersed in the titular character’s experiences. McAdams masters her portrayal of a determined caregiver continually sitting in the uncertainty of worry, despite constantly leaning toward positivity. Here you will find an overview of the cast & crew of Jane by Design season 1, including all the actors, actresses and the director. When you click on a person, you can watch more movies and/or series by him or her. Amy Herzog’s beautiful play “Mary Jane” is, at its core, a study of the extraordinary lengths to which a mother will go to fight and care for her child.

Mary Jane (Academy Award nominee Rachel McAdams) sits in the small kitchen of her one-bedroom apartment, speaking to her super, Ruthie (Brenda Wehle). While Ruthie plunges desperately into the clogged sink, Mary Jane chats aimlessly. As she drones on with an eerie cheeriness, desperate to fill in the dead air, it’s immediately apparent this is a rare opportunity for her to socialize. Though Ruthie initially attempts to indulge Mary Jane, pity takes over, and the older woman instead begins to advise her tenant on the wonders of good sleep hygiene and self-care. Even armed with her cloak of optimism, it’s apparent to everyone except Mary Jane that her emotional well-being is teetering on the edge. The series was canceled after one season while plans were in the works for a second season.

Now Billy dates the new girl, Zoe, which makes Jane feel like he's replacing her. Jane's father died and her mother ran out on Jane and Ben before the series started. Jane's mother has returned home to Jane and Ben, and she stays awhile. Her brother Ben (David Clayton Rogers) tries to make money by getting jobs, but the jobs never work out until he lands one as the athletic assistant at Jane's school. At Donovan Decker, Jane discovers a world full of fashion challenges working for Gray Chandler Murray (Andie MacDowell) and tackles them with the help of her co-workers, Jeremy Jones (Rowley Dennis), India Jourdain (India de Beaufort), Carter (Ser'Darius Blain) and Birdie (Brooke Lyons).

Season 1 of Jane by Design premiered on January 3, 2012. The following is a table with the average estimated number of viewers per episode of Jane by Design on ABC Family.

The play, to be clear, is not about the kid (who we never fully see), but about his mom and her experience caring first for her child at home and then in the hospital. The writer draws from her own experience with a sick child and as you watch this journey you constantly think to yourself that Herzog must have had that very conversation. They’re all too visceral to have been made from whole cloth.

Jane tries to be the best at her job and her school, juggling the everyday challenges of high school and the world of fashion. Healthcare is a vast ecosystem of treatment, suffering and healing, of hospitals, bills and logistics. It’s often, rightly in the US, denigrated for its opacity, inequities and Kafka-esque absurdities.

Wooden Gates

The single ones range from $1000 to $3000+ while the double ones range from $2000 to $5000+. Chains usually have their own categories of numerical gauge ratings. These gauge ratings will determine the sizes that you will need for your specific sliding gateway. If you live in an area that’s prone to termite, pre-treated fir is a very good wood option to consider for your sliding gate. You also have the option to keep it natural by just giving it a clear stain.

Now, thanks to today’s inspirations, and maybe on a much smaller scale, you can protect your own modern domain. Imposing, sturdy and impressive, the gate also comes with a slider feature for ease of operation. Efficient and minimalist, the design features blocks of solid sage green steel and steel mesh insets.

There’s something so relaxing about a traditional white picket fence, especially one surrounded by rose bushes and vines allowed to grow wild. This gate is encircled by lush greenery and is doubly attractive thanks to the trellises overhead that will someday be covered with flowers and vines. Adding a pergola to your front gate easily boosts your home’s kerb appeal.

A bare metal sheet, precise cuts added and traditional hinges and latch, the design is inspiring – effortlessly classy. This aluminium screen gate provides maximum security while allowing a peep from both sides. Great design for front gates of city homes, gardens and suburban front lawns. Adding a name plate makes a huge difference in personalizing your entrance and make it more welcoming. Modern name plate designs, such as those made from marble or SS, can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your gate.

For homes with a lot of space for the driveway, swing doors may not appear good. These doors work in a telescopic manner and involve several small sliding panels to open or close. You can choose if you want them to bring in automation and make them automatic gates or retain them as manually-operated gates. Sliding gates are practical for properties with limited space or steep driveways, which are common features in the hilly terrain of Redwood City. You can opt for a full steel or metal sliding gate or you can opt for a wooden one. Gates are important parts of homes and businesses that bring in added security and contribute to the aesthetics and overall curb appeal of the home.

This design, while firmly rooted in its purpose to shield and protect, does not shy away from showcasing the grandeur of wood in all its splendor. This garden gate was built by attaching second-hand garden tools as diagonal “rungs” and “slats” on a swinging cedar frame. Though this gate won’t afford you much privacy, it will certainly give you a chance to showcase your creativity. Wooden gates cradled in large, dominating hedges always make us think of The Secret Garden. A gate like this can’t help but encourage wonder and curiosity from anyone who passes by. This design feature makes a garden or outdoor space feel truly magical and special, no matter what lies on the other side.

Set the tone for your backyard with these wooden gate ideas, which are perfect for a range of outdoor spaces, from cottage-style gardens to formal lawns. If you want to make a bold statement about your home’s style invest in a good size of the gate. 8 feet main gate designs gained very high popularity in 2022 for their grandeur and presence. Even now whether you prefer a minimalist design or a more elaborate one, an 8 feet main gate can create an evident entrance that sets your home apart. The simple main gate designs have an element of beauty, functionality, and a lighter tone to the exterior home decor. For a low-cost simple main gate design, you can opt for Iron as a gate material.

This enduring structure not only enhances the environment but also offers practical longevity and minimal maintenance, proving to be a wise investment for any property. The shiny steel fence and metal gate present a modern and secure boundary for the property. Reflecting the sunlight, the gate’s sleek surface and clean lines complement the contemporary landscaping. This metallic barrier merges form with function, offering a sturdy and stylish solution for homeowners seeking a minimalist yet protective enclosure.

Plus, it should withstand every weather condition and looks aesthetically pleasing without compromising safety and security. This is why selecting the right materials for the main gate design is extremely crucial. This will directly impact the design and longevity of the gate. The vertical panels offer complete coverage and make a solid design.

Step into the world of enchanting wooden gate ideas where wrought iron accents gracefully steal the show. These majestic iron embellishments seamlessly intertwine with the natural warmth of wood, creating entrances that speak volumes of artistry and timeless elegance. Starting with every possible material, such as fir, pine, cedar, or cypress, and many more, a wooden gate is a perfect addition to your dream home and yard. The steel gate designs are good in strength, lightweight, and corrosion resistance. Due to the excellent workability of the Steel Gate Designs, they are commonly used as the main gates. The Iron is considered the most suitable for the main gate designs.

The movement is in a telescopic pattern, hence the name for this particular design. This type of sliding gate design is also known as the trackless gate. How this type of gate functions is that it has mechanical bearings that are concealed in place of the wheels that are being used in the track version of the sliding gate. This type of sliding gateway variant is recommended for properties that need a fairly wide entryway (such as 6 meters and above).

Step into a realm where the harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics greet you right at the entrance. 2023-2024 Cruises New Voyage Collection Regent Seven Seas Cruises

All passengers regardless of their home country, citizenship or country of residency are responsible for obtaining the proper documentation for travel. This includes passports and visas for any country they may visit during their trip. The Grandeur hosts twice-daily classes on sea days and a single late-day class when ships are in port.

Rotate your phone to portrait to continue.

The pinnacle of sailing options is the 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite at $11,000 a night. It features a $200,000 Hästens Vividus custom handmade mattress, an in-suite spa retreat with a personal sauna and steam room and 270-degree views from the ship’s bow from a 1,292-square-foot wraparound veranda. Those passengers get their own butler and personal car and driver in every port.

A minute-and-a-half less than the done time on the side of the pasta box. Regent Seven Seas Cruise, launched its Sail Into Savings promotion, featuring up to 30 percent off cruise fares on select sailings to Alaska and Europe in 2024, according to a press release. If, like me, you're still a little blown away by the fact that anyone is shelling out $11,000 a night for a room on a cruise ship, one other thing to remember is the Regent Suite comes with a lot of extras. Some seven-night Miami-based sailings go for as low as $3,700 per person based on double occupancy. Regent Seven Seas Cruises (RSSC), formerly known as Radisson Seven Seas Cruises, is a luxury cruise line headquartered in Miami, Florida. Whether you stay overnight or are in port for the day, your toughest decision will probably be choosing which of the complimentary (and unlimited) shore excursions you would like to do first.

It’s filled with fantastical tree-like arches right out of Alice in Wonderland with a cascading waterfall sculpture. At night, thousands of individually placed crystal-faceted leaves encrusted on pillars and branches illuminate the space. The ship’s interior spaces are crafted by Miami-based Studio DADO, which has put its mark on sister lines Oceania Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Stephano also leads culinary safaris ashore, such as a visit to a spice market in Belize made earlier this year. "Look at that view behind you," Montague said, pointing to floor-to-ceiling windows framing a vast expanse of island-dotted water (the suite unveiling was taking place during a short sneak-peek sailing for travel agents from Miami to the Bahamas). "You're going to wake up [to a view of] a different port almost every day." It’s a welcome and fitting addition to the dragon and prayer wheel sculptures on its two sister ships. All three ships in the Explorer class are about 55,500 gross tons, with Grandeur sporting a 744-guest capacity among its all-suite offerings. The line has three older ships and just had two larger vessels ordered by parent company Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, but they are not due until 2026 and 2029.

As is the case with Regent's Explorer Class ships, all the cabins on the Small Cruise Ship Class vessels are suites. One big difference, though, is that these three older ships don't have the truly giant suites found on the Explorer Class ships. The biggest suites on all three of the vessels are in the 1,000-square-foot to 1,200-square-foot range. In addition, Regent ships are known for being particularly opulent when compared to other ultra-luxury vessels. The line's new Explorer Class ships, in particular, are loaded with soaring spaces lined with pricey marble, crystal chandeliers and high-end art.

The master bath also has a walk-in shower so big that we suspect a couple of the other writers at Sunday's event got lost inside and are still there. Notably, the shower has a floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the ocean. The super-pricey bed is within the Regent Suite's master bedroom area, which is the centerpiece of the complex. In addition to a main bedroom and adjacent lounge space, there's a massive master bathroom that doubles as a personal spa, complete with its own sauna and steam room.

I put a few dirty dishes in the wrong spots and banged my hand opening the still-new utensil drawer at my station, but the sweet smell of success pervaded both my station and the entire kitchen as my classmates turned their ingredients into a finished product. My pasta al limone, topped with basil and Parmesan, turned out intensely lemony and creamy. My crepes, cooked in clarified butter, were amazingly thin from following Stephano's technique, and they were delicious topped with powdered sugar, blueberries and allspice ice cream. In the hourlong class, the lemon pasta and crepes my fellow students and I made were a success, aside from a few burnt crepes. Chef John Stephano guided our group through recipes for pasta al limone and French crepes with a rapid-fire, friendly and energetic approach. The Seven Seas Grandeur debuted for Regent Seven Seas Cruises late last year as the third ship in a class that launched in 2016 with the Seven Seas Explorer.

When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. In addition to unlimited spa treatments, perks of staying in the complex that come at no extra cost (well, after the initial five- or six-digit payment for the sailing) include first-class domestic flights to reach the ship. Those staying in the suite also get a personal car, driver and guide in every port. They have a concierge on call before they sail to help them plan their trip and, of course, the dedicated butler to help make arrangements once they're onboard.

Until now, that suite has widely been considered the be-all and end-all of suites at sea. The bridge also doesn't have such luxury touches as a Steinway grand piano, designer furniture and an art collection worth thousands of dollars. Located at the very top of the ship, the Regent Suite really does have one of the best views at sea. Even the captain of the vessel, three decks below on the bridge, doesn't get quite the line of sight that a Regent Suite guest can get through its seemingly endless glass walls. Given that many Seven Seas Splendor sailings run 10 to 16 nights, we're talking about a total spend here of $110,000 to $176,000 in many cases. The new Regent Suite on luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises' just-unveiled Seven Seas Splendor, which Regent executives showed off to U.S. media for the first time on Sunday, already is booked solid through November at $11,000 a night for two.

Onboard, you’ll find a range of elevated and unique experiences designed to appeal to the line's cultured and well-travelled clientele. For example, why not learn how to recreate dishes from the places you're visiting at the Culinary Arts Kitchen – Regent's state-of-the-art onboard cooking school? This is arguably the ultimate souvenir as it lasts forever and the dishes you make back home will bring back wonderful memories of your trip. Explorer Class vessels also offer a wide array of elegant and high-end restaurants, all included in the fare. They include Compass Rose, the international cuisine staple of all Regent ships; Regent's signature steakhouse Prime 7; casual restaurant La Veranda; Asian eatery Pacific Rim; and French restaurant Chartreuse. It began operating just a few years after the founding of luxury cruise competitors Crystal Cruises (now reborn as Crystal) and Seabourn.

Regent isn't the only cruise line with culinary class kitchens, but having taken classes on both the Explorer and the Grandeur -- and on quite a few other ships -- I find Regent's to be among the best. The 18-station version onboard the Grandeur, and the classes it offered, did not disappoint during a two-night cruise from Miami in January. As Montague noted, there aren't any super suites on land where you can get a sweeping view of a different iconic destination -- Monaco, Portofino, Venice -- every few days. "It's unique," Regent president and CEO Jason Montague said of the suite when I asked him where he thinks it falls among the list of top suites at sea. "There's nothing like it, not just in the cruise industry but the overall [travel] industry."

Restaurants that celebrate the world's greatest cuisines are another onboard highlight, with choices ranging from the modern French flair of Chartreuse to Pan-Asian flavours at Pacific Rim and the simple pleasure of a perfect burger at the Pool Grill. The newest of the ships, the 2003-built Seven Seas Voyager, measures 42,363 tons, which is about 12% smaller than the slightly older, 48,075-ton Seven Seas Mariner. In an effort to improve passenger flow, for instance, Regent turned around the grand staircase in the central atrium on Seven Seas Splendor as compared to how it was laid out on Seven Seas Explorer. A major focal point of the vessel's interior, the staircase now cascades down from the public areas on Deck 5 toward the magnificent, marble-floored promenade on Deck 4.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is the world's only cruise line that includes unlimited shore excursions in every port. This doesn't just make this luxury line good value for money, it also means Regent is ideal for genuine travellers who are citizens of the world and seek to engage more deeply with the destinations they visit, rather than simply ticking sights and attractions off a list. Each of the vessels is home to a ridiculously large, forward-facing room complex called the Regent Suite that, at 4,443 square feet, is one of the most elaborate and expensive cruise ship suites ever built. (Each also has an equally stunning price tag of $11,000 per night.) Each of the ships also has a dozen more suites that measure in the 1,000-square-foot to 2,000-square-foot range, as well as additional accommodations in the 500-square-foot to 1,000-square-foot range.
